Coconut Oil: The Miracle Oil

We all have at least heard of coconut oil, it can be used for cooking, for skin and even for hair. Coconut oil is made of copra or dried coconut flesh. It has many benefits for the body both inside and out. This might be because it is made up of healthy fats including caprylic acid, lauric acid, and capric acid. Extra Virgin unrefined organic coconut oil has the most benefits.

These benefits include:

  • antimicrobial
  • antifungal
  • has antioxidants that help smooth the skin
  • helps with burns, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis
  • great all natural conditioner, can also help with dandruff
  • reduces inflammation
  • great moisturizer and face cleanser
  • improves digestion by helping absorb vitamins, calcium, and magnesium
  • helps with blood pressure by increasing HDL
  • helps with UTIs by acting as a natural antibiotic and clearing bacteria
  • helps with bruises and speeds up healing process of damaged tissues
  • forms a protective layers over the infected body part from dust, bacteria, fungi, air
  • has a natural SPF of 4
  • filled with vitamin E, vitamin K, and other minerals like iron

In general it is not only filled with fatty acids, 90% saturated fats, but also fatty alcohols. Provides essentials proteins and highly effective in aiding in protein loss. This is one reason why it helps with hair loss and hair re-growth. Excellent massage oil. Effective moisturizer for all skin types, from oily to dry skin.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use coconut oil:

  • lice and dandruff treatment- massage into scalp and massage into the ends
  • body oil- apply onto wet skin after a shower and pat dry
  • cuticle oil- apply at the base of the nails, will also help your manicure last longer
  • lip balm- natural remedy for chapped lips
  • makeup brush cleaner- use 2 parts antibacterial soap 1 part coconut oil to clean
  • makeup remover- easy to remove makeup, especially waterproof makeup
  • face moisturizer- can be used as a primer under foundation for that smooth skin
  • body moisturizer- leaves skin glow-y not lotion-y
  • under eye cream- dab on under eye bags and fine lines

These are just MY favorite ways to use coconut oil. The possibilities are endless. This oil has so many benefits with very little side effects. The main side effect is allergy may occur if you are allergic to coconuts. Always remember when using on skin to do a patch test before using all over.

Tampa 2k18

This January I travel from Miami to Tampa, it was my first time ever visiting this beautiful city. It was a bittersweet trip. I was happy to be able to spend time with my family and get closer to my cousins. I also went to Busch Gardens for the first time!

So not going to lie, I had a blast at Busch Gardens. The roller coasters were a blast. My favorite was by far Montu. Cheetah was pretty bad ass too. We got to drink AND ride roller coasters ? Yes please ! I didn’t ride Sheikra because I hate drops…bummer I know. The park itself is vibrant, colorful filled with plants and wild life. We were lucky enough to go on a weekend with amazing weather, no rain and it was cold. As an animal lover I was skeptical about going to a place where they keep animals, but hey I have seen worse. I got to feed kangaroos and hey peep that hippo butt. It was fun running around the park with my family, we even took grandma. It’s safe to say we all had a good time drinking, riding, and being tourists in our state. A Floridan’s specialty, am I right?

Here is the YouTube video I have been promising forever:

Now the reason I was in Tampa wasn’t the happiest. That’s why I said it was a bittersweet trip. In my last post I stated I don’t like to share my personal life but here I go again. I was up in Tampa for a celebration of life for my cousin who passed of this disease. I was lucky to have the opportunity to celebrate his life. I was also lucky enough to get closer to family. In the past year I have lost two people to ALS. Below I am going to include the link to donate to the ALS association. Feel free to donate as little or as much as you can, any little bit helps.

Green Waters, Stronger Messages

Now a days we are all caught up in technology we don’t take a minute to step back and take a minute to stop and enjoy life. I am totally guilty of this, so yes include me. We are all glued to our phones, tablets, computers, video games,  whatever our vice is we all have one. It is so crazy to think just 20 years ago we didn’t have most of these devices, what did we do back then?

bug splatWhy am I starting with all of this you may ask, in the Lush Kitchen they have a bath bomb that invokes these thoughts. Bugsplat as it’s called comes with an insert that reads “Welcome to the Drone Age” When I first got this bath bomb I couldn’t put it back in the box fast enough, all I could pick up was this strong smell. As you drop it in the bath it definitely mellows out.  It has the same scent as the bug perfume with sandal wood, pepper, and elemi. What drew me to this bath bomb was all the money you spend of this bad boy is donated to Reprive to help fund their campaign against drone strikes.  A good cause and my own lagoon ? I’m sold.

What pairs with such a spicy scent you may ask? A soft floral, and since I have been binge watching season 1 of Game of Thrones I have no better match than Ghost Shower Gel. This is one of my favorites it also has a matching jelly, it is a thick shimmery white shower gel. Ghost is a very soft floral, yet lingers on the skin for hours.  The jasmine sticks out more than the rose. However, it is not as strong as sex bomb or flying fox. If you like florals you will love this guy. My skin was so soft after this bath, I don’t know if it was the orchid infusion from Ghost or from soaking in Bugsplat for so long. I am like seriously softer than a baby!

Weed Helps Epilepsy, Duh

Doctors who treat Dravet syndrome can’t stop their patients’ seizures—but a chemical in weed may help. Dravet syndrome is a rare, genetic form of epilepsy that affects less than one in 16,000 children. It’s diagnosed when infants who are perfectly healthy start having seizures around their first birthday. From there, doctors can prescribe medications that…

via A chemical in weed can treat a devastating form of epilepsy — Quartz

I don’t know about you but I hate taking my 3654975 pills to treat my “disability” aka epilepsy. I am just 24 years old and some day am throwing up my life or feel like a zombie from everything. Sometimes I think the side effects are worse than the pills. At the same time seizures are the worst, so what can I do when there is a gridlock state like Florida where medical marijuana is technically legal but the government has everything on hold? Just wait, it makes things frustrating and difficult. Research like this not only gives us patients hope but hopefully pushes our representatives to get moving and push the laws!

Super Foods for That Summer Bod

summer bod

Glasses: Dollskill-Quay Top: Tillys Bottom: Victoria Secret-Pink

Summer is coming, and it’s coming fast. We can all think of one thing that summer body! Well there are easy ways of slimming down without sacrificing flavor or spending hours in the kitchen. I’m going to give you some healthy examples that will put you on the fast track to the body you want with out all that BS. Just substitute these ingredients in your recipes. Best part is they are all vegetarian.

  1. Lentils– loaded with antioxidants that can lower the risks for cancer, diabetes, heart disease; also full of minerals including iron, zinc, potassium and folate
  2. Balsamic Vinegar– contains polyphenols or inflammation fighters, appears to help lower hypertension
  3. Unsweetened Cocoa Powder– usually you think unhealthy wrong, 2 tablespoons has nearly 4g of fiber and 16% of your daily value of magnesium
  4. Tomato Paste- research shows you might absorb the lycopene better in cooked tomatoes vs. fresh tomatoes, lycopene is the antioxidant linked to protection against certain types of cancer and skin wrinkles
  5. Pumkin Seeds– good source of minerals like zinc, iron, vitamin E, rich in lignans plant compounds that help moderate estrogen production
  6. Barley– keeps heart healthy, rich in fiber, reduces risk of hemroids, maintains a healthy colon
  7. White Pototoes– if not turned into french fries can be good for you, 140 cal per 5 oz potato, good source of fiber, contains carbs, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals
  8. Cauliflower– packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, promotes detox
  9. Artichokes- tough on the outside but soft on the inside; rich in fiber, antioxidants, polyphenols help in fighting cancer
  10. Parsley- 1 tablespoon = 1 calorie, helps build strong bones, rich in vitamin K and antioxidants
  11. Chia Seeds– absorb 10 times their weight in water, slows the absorption of glucose and keeps the blood sugar steady, high in fiber, calcium, iron, and zinc
  12. Sauerkraut– high in probiotics, boots immune system, prevents colon cancer, and can improve mood

So what makes most of these foods “super foods” is the antioxidants. That means these foods have properties that include anti-aging, protecting the body from cell damage that results from free radicals. This includes heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. I eat these foods all the time. For example pumpkin seeds as snacks, or cauliflower mashed up ( like mashed potatoes) the possibilities are endless. FYI it doesn’t have to be summer to be healthy! These foods taste fucking AMAZING and are worth a try!

Lavender, Purple Bliss

Lavender is my personal favorite, I love everything about it. I love the color, smell, the way it looks, the benefits, I can go on forever. Lavender has been used for over 2500 years. Egyptians used it for mummification and as perfume. The Romans used it for baths, in cooking, and scenting the air. The name lavender comes from Latin lavare that means “to wash”. Today you can find Lavender growing in Southern Europe, Australia, and the United States. The essential oil is extracted from the fresh flowers of the plant and used for many purposes. This is the most used essential oil in the world today.

  • Some benefits include:
  • reduces anxiety and stress
  • helps heal burns and wounds
  • improves sleep
  • restores skin completion & helps reduce acne
  • improves eczema & psoriasis
  • alleviates headaches

These are just some of the amazing benefits associated with lavender. Researchers from China discovered that it can help your body produce three powerful antioxidants. This can help slow aging skin. It also used to treat stress, anxiety, depression, and migraines. Two different studies showed it helped with PTSD and postpartum depression. Due to its antimicrobial properties it prevents infections and combats fungal disorders. Another great use is for hair, helps with thinning hair and hair growth. As a person with chronic migraines lavender is my go to, inhale for about 15 minutes and feel some relief. When it comes to lavender and it’s benefits everyone thinks sleep. This might be one of its most powerful benefits. It can help with the length of sleep you get, time it takes to fall asleep, restfulness, and reduced symptoms of insomnia.

Turmeric, The Other Gold

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for a variety of conditions. Turmeric benefits are so great a bunch of articles have been written about it, from medical professionals to bloggers alike. It has different uses and benefits. It is arguably the powerful herb at fighting and preventing disease. Turmeric is a relative of ginger and grows in the tropical regions of Southern Asia. The majority is grown in India for curry. It’s roots are bulbs that produce rhizomes and stems for new plants with dull yellow flowers.

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, its most important role. It has been used in both Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive, skin, liver, wounds, and different diseases. A number of lab test show curcumin does have anticancer effects. It kills cancer cells and prevents them from growing. For those not sick taking it as a preventive measure won’t hurt. There has been a lot of talk about turmeric and it’s anticancer properties but its preventive effects can be related to its antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage. The main point is more research needs to be done.

Antioxidants scavenge molecules known as free radicals that damage cells. They can go as far as damaging cell membranes, tempering with DNA and cause cell death. Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This is one of the reasons it is used for the skin.  The antibacterial properties also reduce scarring and acne. WARNING turmeric is considered a natural dye so it does stain anything it comes in contact with yellow.  If you have yellow residue on your skin dab a cotton ball in water or milk and rub it to remove the residue. Always perform an arm test to check for allergies to any of the ingredients !

Clay, a Perfect Skin Care Match

Clay, no I’m not talking about play dough! I’m talking about that amazing stuff that we pull out of the ground, yeah I know not what you were thinking. Dirt is not the first thing that comes to mind when we think of skin care but the purifying properties are just too good to pass up. Clay is a soft, fine, mineral substance. Depending on where it comes from, there are many different types of clays that can be used for different reasons. Depending on your skin type one clay might be better for you than another. Clays are usually best for normal to oily skin types because they absorb moisture.

What some of us don’t know is our skin type. Each of our face is different, facial skin is different from person to person. We can be dry, oily, or combination. What does that mean?  Think about your face midday with out product how does it feel. Are you comfortable or are you tight? There is your answer!

Some examples of clays used in skin care products:

Brazilian Clay is naturally colored an does not contain dyes or pigments. The various shades are achieved by variations in the minerals found in the soil in the different regions of Brazil.

Kaolin Clay is a very fin powdered clay and can come in a variety of colors. It is a generic clay with less liquid absorbing abilities than most. It’s best for sensitive and dry skin.

Sea Clay is a dark green clay that comes from mud laid under the sea millions of years ago. It’s best for normal to oily skin.

DRY/NORMAL:Rose Clay,Kaolin Clay,Brazilian Clay

NORMAL/OILY:Sea Clay, French Green Clay, Bentonite Clay, Brazilian Clay

At stardustfunk we have been working hard testing products (never on animals!) to see what clays work best in our recipes! Good news is we are getting ready to launch our new line of masks and scrubs!

SHEA BUTTER that is all

Shea butter or Butyrospermum Parkii if we are being scientific is an off white fatty substance obtained from the nuts of the shea tree mainly from West Africa. Did you know that Cleopatra used shea butter in her beauty routine? If its fit for a queen it’s fit for me. Most of us know of this gift from the earth because it is typically used in natural skin care products. Raw and unrefined shea butter is rich in oleic acids, vitamin E and vitamin A. It also has high amounts of fatty acids. Studies show not only does it help reduces inflammation but it also has some of the same anti-tumor promoting benefits that cinnamon has. Who doesn’t want baby soft skin at the end of the day?

But why shea butter you ask?

Raw shea butter is a great ingredient because it hydrates and helps the skin glow. it helps provide hydration to the skin, keeping it soft. Shea butter also helps reduce wrinkles and boost collagen and cell regeneration. Do you have a dry scalp or hair? you guessed it more shea butter! It works much like coconut oil, seals in moisture conditioning the scalp alleviating dandruff, leave on for 20-30 minutes rinse then shampoo and condition like normal. Perfect to help eliminate that itchy winter skin, or to prevents wind burn. Shea butter naturally has a SPF of 6. It is a much healthier choice than sunscreen. Brace yourselves this is my favorite one because I am proof of this, of course nothing is over night, reduces the appearance of stretch marks and scarring. It took a few months of applying every night but stretch marks gone. Prevents diaper rash for babies because of its anti-inflamitory and antifungal properties. It’s pretty damn awesome.

If list are more your style heres 5 more reasons why you should be using shea butter every day:

  1. Can enhance the elasticity of your skin, some even say it helps with cellulite.
  2. Can help with those pesky bags under your eyes.
  3. Useful as skin lotion, can be mixed with essential oils, has SPF of 6.
  4. Can be used daily to reduce inflammation, eczema and psoriasis.
  5. Using it as a primer or foundation for your make up will not only hydrate dry skin but will help make up pop but will help it last longer. (be careful if you have acne prone or oily skin it may clog pores)

If that’s not enough for ya I don’t know what is baby.

You can find shea butter at your local health food store. Always look for unrefined and organic.
